Turning a setback
into a new way forward.
When C.J. Robertson started Pilgrim Cleaners, nearly all dry cleaners relied exclusively on pickup-and-delivery service. He invested the cash he had in a brand-new delivery truck. Then, while it was at the paint shop, the truck was stolen.
Rather than close the business, C.J. tried a different approach. He offered a lower price to customers who brought their garments directly to the cleaning plant and returned later to pick them up.
The idea was an immediate success. Customers appreciated the savings, and operating costs dropped. This new “cash-and-carry” model worked so well that C.J. brought the concept to Houston in 1945.
That practical response to a difficult moment helped popularize the drop-off and pickup method that would become standard throughout the dry-cleaning industry.
